Description: This engraving portrays a failed Catholic plot to blow up the English House of Lords and assassinate James I, popularly known as the Gunpowder-Treason plot. Led by Robert Catesby, the objective of the plot was to install Elizabeth, the Catholic daughter of James, on the throne of England. A group of cardinals surround the Pope (upper right); the conspirators are captured, sentenced and hung (lower left).
