Scripture Reference:

Description: The brewer fills a number of barrels with beer from a large pitcher. A second brewer stands on a platform at the edge of the canal; he uses a crane to lower a bucket into a water ship. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 42:1-2 though Luiken cites Psalm 42: 2-3. Motto: The refreshment is ready, / Where is thirst’s suffering? Poem: When thirst and drink meet, / Bitter is the source of sweetness. / Oh Soul! The desiring and the giving, / Your thirst, and life’s fountain, / Shall be eternal refreshment; /Whoever loves luxury, seek such a life. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
