Scripture Reference:

Description: Inside their workshop, three hatters are in the process of kneading wet felt fabric against two large stone slabs. A number of finished hats hang on the walls. A city canal can be seen through the open door, with houses and passersby on the opposite side. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 91:4. Motto: The hat of virtue is beautiful, / More so than a gold crown. Poem: The hat serves to shield the head /From sunshine, and heavy rain: /If one would likewise cover the bare soul, /The principal part of the human life, /With virtue, to oppose evil, /Then one would be royally protected.
