Book II, Emblem ii

Book Title: Pia desideria : emblematis elegiis & affectibus SS. Patrum illustrata / authore Hermanno Hugone Societatis Iesu ; ad Vrbanum VIII, Pont. Max.

Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629

Image Title: Book II, Emblem ii

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements and metaphors of the scripture and poem that ensue the pictura. A woman stands in the middle of a vast labyrinth that signifies the power of error to confound. In one hand she holds a staff, in the other a rope, the opposite end of which is held by an angel at the top of a tall tower. The caption in Latin reads "Would that my way(s) be directed toward protecting your justice." This represents the supplicant’s desire for divine instruction, without which she would without fail go astray.
