Scripture Reference:

Description: The eye of God watches an English Catholic man attempt to carry out the Gunpowder Plot, as he sneaks into the House of Lords by night. Led by Robert Catesby, the plot was meant to install Elizabeth, the Catholic daughter of King James I, on the throne of England. In the upper right, a group of cardinals surround the Pope, who presumably oversees the execution attempt; in the lower left, the revealed conspirators are mutilated and hanged. The caption in the lower right, “Proditio,” means “treason” in Latin.
