Research Tips for Better Results

The Church Fathers and Mothers: Research Strategies for Accessing and Using Texts from the Patristic Period

Reading the early church fathers and mothers can be important for many classes at Candler. Finding, navigating, and citing these texts though, can be difficult. In this session we will provide an introduction to the texts of the patristic period, explore the best ways to find relevant material in original language and in English translation, and discuss the use and citation of these materials.

Biblical Exegesis Software: BibleWorks and Accordance

Are you getting a little overwhelmed with Bible translations, original languages, and concordances? If so, there is powerful software that can help. Accordance (http://www.accordancebible.com) and BibleWorks (http://www.bibleworks.com) are software programs developed to help users access and search Biblical texts and other exegetical aids. In the first half of this session, we will provide a broad introduction to Biblical software and the similarities between BibleWorks and Accordance. In the second half, we will split into two groups and look more closely at the specifics of these two programs. No prior experience with the software is required. If you have a copy of either tool (both are available on library computers), please bring it with you, but computers will be provided for attendees.

Using Special Collections and Archives

Would you like to examine a first edition of John Wesley’s sermon on Christian Perfection (1741) or manuscript evidence of the correspondence between the English Cardinal Manning and Florence Nightingale? In this workshop you can learn about the scope of the library’s special collections and archives and how to research and access these resources Special attention will be given to research opportunities in special collections and archives for enterprising students.
