Project restores African American cemetery in Penfield, GA

Since 2019, Pitts Theology Library has partnered with Historic Rural Churches of Georgia on a variety of projects that relate to religious spaces and experiences in Georgia. Recently, we’ve joined a group of organizations to work on clearing, restoring, and mapping Penfield African American Cemetery in Greene County, Georgia. The exhibit below tells the story of Penfield, describes the work we’ve been doing, and demonstrates the progress we’ve made toward our goal of providing access and documenting the cemetery.
