Description: This engraving illustrates ordination to the first of the three major orders: the sub-diaconate, the fifth of seven ordinations culminating in full priesthood. Seated on his throne is the bishop who, with his attendants, is holding out the vessels used during Mass to each ordainee. One ordainee kneels and holds in his arms the tunic that is the particular vestment of the sub-diaconate. After this ordination, the sub-deacon is permitted to read the Epistle during the celebration of the Mass. The image is flanked by a border containing angels, or putti, standing over eagles and holding snakes.
