Description: Knowing that she herself is barren, Sarai gives Abraham, her husband, the slave–girl Hagar so that he might have an heir. Hagar gives birth to Ishmael and shows contempt for her mistress. In response, Sarai chases her away. The angel of the Lord visits Hagar in the wilderness and commands her to return, promising her innumerable descendants. The Lord also makes his covenant with Abraham.
