Image Title: The Wheelwright

Scripture Reference:

Description: Under a tree, a wheelwright uses an auger to finish the interior surface of a wheel’s hub. A finished wheel stands behind him; in the background, a horse pulls a loaded wagon. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is 2 Kings 6:15-17.

Motto:
Dost thou long for sweet comfort,
Load thy burdensome bundle onto the Lord.

Poem:
The discovery of the wagon wheel
Enables the easy transport of heavy burdens:
How many a soul lugs and drags,
In the dirt of sorrow and uproar,
Whereas the heavenly wagon is ready,
To take up all its grief!
