Description: On the left page, a border of historiated images frames the text. In the top register, David readies his sling against Goliath as Saul, the Israelite soldiers, and the Philistine forces look on (1 Samuel 17). In the middle register, Jonathan prepares to send an arrow to warn David of Saul’s impending threat (1 Samuel 20:17-23). The bottom register depicts David raising his sword to cut off Goliath's head flanked by the Israelite and Philistine armies (1 Samuel 17). On the right page, the top register depicts David displaying the severed head of Goliath as the Israelites rejoice with music and revelry (1 Samuel 17). In the second register from the top, Saul attempts to pin David to the wall with his spear in a fit of rage after David’s attempt to soothe him with the lyre (1 Samuel 19). The register below depicts Ahimelech offering David and his men the Bread of the Presence in the tabernacle as they flee Saul (1 Samuel 21:1-9).
