Description: The pastry baker is in the process of rolling out a sheet of dough. He has turned around to talk to his apprentice who carries a large pastry trimmed with the head and the tail feather of a peacock. In the window, several pastries are displayed and plucked game birds hang suspended by their feet. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Amos 6:6-7. Motto: Today beautiful, / Tomorrow fodder. Poem: The wedding feast is being prepared, / As food of vanity/Yet tomorrow the joy has disappeared:/But if thy heart had ears, /Thou would know a feast of eternal goods, /To which God’s love beckons us.
