Description: The printer’s device of a printer known by the initials W.S. who created this device for the Stationers’ Company, also known as Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers which was formed in 1403. In the middle is a depiction of Jesus rising from the dead stepping over a skeleton and a dragon. Surrounding Jesus are Latin excerpts from four biblical verses. In the upper-right, there is “CONFIDITE VICI MUDU IOA 16” which is representative of John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” In the lower-right, there is “UBI TUA MORS VICTORIA 1 COR 15” which is representative of 1 Corinthians 15:55, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” In the lower-left, there is “CONTERET CAPUT TUU GEN: 3,” which is representative of Genesis 3:15, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” In the upper-left, there is “ERO MORSUS INFERN TUUS OSE 13,” which is representative of Hosea 13:14 from the Latin Vulgate, “I will ransom them; redeem them from death. I will be thy plagues, O Death! Your bite will be hell! Repentance shall be hid from mine eyes”.
