Author: Dietenberger, Johann, ca. 1475-1537
Image Title: Phoebe and Paul
Scripture Reference:
Description: Phoebe arrives as a courier to deliver a letter to the Apostle Paul. From the Dietenberger Bible, the German translation issued by Johann Dietenberger (d. 1534) as a Roman Catholic response to Luther’s translation of the Scriptures, also issued in 1534. This woodcut is prompted by the reference in Paul’s letter to Phoebe, a servant (or deaconess) of the church in Cenchrea (16:1) whom Paul commends to the Romans.
