Description: Historiated title-page of the Augsburg Confession. The 1540 edition of the Augsburg Confession contains alterations by Phillip Melanchthon (1497-1560) and is called the “Variata” or altered edition. This Variata edition is not accepted by Lutheran Churches today, instead they accept the “unaltered” 1530 Augsburg Confession. On the cover is Samson killing Goliath (I Samuel 17). The Bible verse is Psalms 119.
