Image Title: The Brewer

Scripture Reference:

Description: The brewer fills a number of barrels with beer from a large pitcher. A second brewer stands on a platform at the edge of the canal; he uses a crane to lower a bucket into a water ship. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 42:1-2 though Luiken cites Psalm 42:2-3.

Motto:
The refreshment is ready,
Where is thirst’s suffering?

Poem:
When thirst and drink meet,
The origin of the sweetness is bitter.
O Soul! the desiring and the giving,
Thy thirst, and life’s fountain,
Shall be eternal refreshment;
He who likes luxury should seek such a life.
