Return from Remote Learning at Pitts

On behalf of the team at Pitts, we wish a warm welcome back to students, faculty, and staff as they return to campus after a period of remote learning! We hope you visit the library and make use of its collections, services, and spaces for the remainder of the spring semester.

Please note a few reminders as you come back to campus and plan your visit to the library:

  • EmoryCards are required for entrance into Pitts Library. This ensures that we have accurate numbers for physical distancing requirements and ensures a means of contact tracing if necessary. If you need a replacement ID, please visit Emory Card.
  • Non-Emory visitors must make an approved reservation to use the library’s collections and spaces in order to allow for contact tracing.
  • Masks are required at all times in Pitts. Help us keep everyone safe, by observing university COVID-19 guidelines and make sure to cover your nose and mouth.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the library and must be consumed outside in accordance with CDC recommendations to limit the spread of Covid-19.
  • Pitts library hours can be found at pitts.emory.edu/hours.
  • Physical course reserves are available at the circulation desk. These items are not organized by title, author, or course, but are instead organized by Library of Congress call numbers. When you need something from physical reserves, please give the call number to the staff member.
  • Reference staff are available to find what you need, get access to databases, and help you research at the highest level. Please visit us at the Reference Desk from M–F; 9–4 or by contacting us at pitts.emory.edu/ask. You can also schedule a virtual consultation by visiting pitts.emory.edu/beard and pitts.emory.edu/mclean.
  • Weekly Workshops resume in-person this Spring, including Zotero, Exegesis, and Alumni Access workshops. See the full schedule at pitts.emory.edu/ww.
  • Kessler Conversations are coming up soon! Visit pitts.emory.edu/kesslerconversations to register and learn about our guest speakers on Women of the Reformation, starting this Tuesday, February 2nd at 12pm EST.

We look forward to seeing you in the library!

Summer Policy Updates

Pitts is proud to have remained open throughout this challenging academic year, thanks to our tremendous staff working to provide patrons the resources and support they need, safely and sustainably. We are excited to update our policies to make access to the library even easier, while reminding all of patrons to continue to adhere to public health guidance provided by Emory University (http://www.emory.edu/forward). Below are details about using Pitts this summer.

  • Beginning Monday, May 17th, Pitts will be open to eligible patrons Monday through Friday, 10am-4pm, for book pickup and as study space.
  • All visitors are still required to complete the Emory “Returning to Campus” onboarding process (https://www.emory.edu/forward/returning-to-campus/index.html) and must bring a valid Emory ID to enter.
  • Reservations are no longer required to use the library as study space.
  • Social distancing will be enforced through furniture arrangement, masks are required at all times, food and drink are not allowed, and the library will remain a silent study space.

In accordance with guidelines from Emory’s Environmental Health and Safety Office, the library’s stacks will remain closed to patron browsing. Patrons can make online requests for books or scans of chapters or articles, and the collections are open for virtual browsing through discoverE. Instructions for online requests can be found online (http://pitts.emory.edu/remotelearning), where you will also find a webinar that will guide you through the process. As always, we encourage you to reach out to us online (http://pitts.emory.edu/ask) or via text (404.383.5916) with any questions you have about library hours, policies, or spaces.

Throughout this challenging year, Pitts has worked hard to balance the safety of staff and patrons with our mission to maximize the impact of our collections for teaching and research. We thank you for your support and patience, and we hope you will let us know how we’re doing.

Pitts Remote Learning Update

Due to health concerns, Pitts Theology Library is now operating under modified policies (see below).

  1. The library will continue its spring break hours into next week (Monday–Friday, 7:30am–5pm).
  2. Entry to the library is limited to Emory Card holders only to encourage social distancing per the university’s recommendations.
  3. Reference services will be available remotely for those off-campus Monday–Friday from 8:30am–5pm.
In the meantime, check out Pitts’ Online Resources for Remote Learning webpage, where you can find more details about modified services and special resources to support remote learning!

Finals at Pitts

As we approach the end of the Fall Semester, the staff of Pitts Theology Library wishes you well on your upcoming work and invites you to rely on the spaces and the resources of the library to help you do your best. Finals bring a few changes to our practices and policies, which are designed to help you succeed. Please be aware of the following, and please contact the library at theologyref@emory.edu or 404.727.0645 if you have any questions. Good luck with your work!

  • Extended Hours: From Wednesday 12/11 through Tuesday 12/17, the library will extend its hours. Opening hours will stay the same, but the library will stay open additional hours at night. For full hours, please visit http://pitts.emory.edu/hours. Please note that the building locks soon after the library closes, so all students will need to leave the Candler School of Theology building complex when the library closes. There are 24-hour study spaces on campus, particularly the Woodruff Library (http://web.library.emory.edu/using-the-library/visiting-the-library/hours/).
  • Silent Study Space: From Wednesday 12/11 through Tuesday 12/17, the library will be a silent study space. We ask that all patrons respect their colleagues and go outside the library for any conversations.
  • Pitts Hospitality: During Finals, the library becomes a popular study place for all members of the Emory community. As a part of the Emory community, the library is open to all Emory faculty, students, and staff, and during Finals we often welcome many new patrons to the library. We encourage all to extend hospitality to one another, sharing tables and assistance in the space, while alerting the library staff to any problematic behavior. For our building use policies, please visit http://pitts.emory.edu/policies.
  • Snacks Only: Due to higher library use, we make extra efforts to keep the space clean for our patrons and safe for our books. Please remember our food and drink policy, which allows only small snacks that don’t create a mess or odors and only drinks in spill-proof containers. In addition, we ask that you clean up after yourself and alert staff to any spills or clutter needing attention. Please also be aware of how you are disposing of your waste, using the proper recycling and compost receptacles.
  • Extra Study Space: The library is happy to open extra study space for students during this busy time. The 3rd Floor Classrooms (Rooms 368 and 369) will be open as a study space from Wednesday 12/11 through Tuesday 12/17, and the 3rd Floor Lecture Hall (Room 360) will be open as a study space from Saturday 12/14 through Tuesday 12/17. If you would like to learn about study space at Pitts (or take a virtual tour!), visit http://pitts.emory.edu/map.
  • Advanced Booking for Small Group Study Rooms: The 7 small group study rooms are popular during Finals, and so we encourage Candler students to book them early. For Finals, we have extended the advance booking time to 14 days so that you can book now for any day of the Finals period. You can read the room policies and make reservations online at http://pitts.emory.edu/rooms.
  • Let Us Know How We’re Doing: Each year the library staff works hard to adjust policies and practices to make the library a welcoming space for good work. If you like what you see or notice something that you think we could do better, please let us know at theologyref@emory.edu or 404.727.0645.

On behalf of all the staff at Pitts Theology Library, we wish you the best during the exam period—you’ve got this!
